Simbu PHA Strengthens Healthcare Ties on World Kidney Day
MENDI, Southern Highlands – March 13, 2025: In a show of regional solidarity and commitment to specialized healthcare, Simbu Provincial Health Authority (PHA) CEO Dr. Kassi Ken and his team visited Mendi Provincial Hospital to mark World Kidney Day and reinforce public-to-public partnerships across the Highlands.
Despite arriving late due to unforeseen travel constraints, Dr. Ken joined the Southern Highlands PHA (SHPHA) executive team for a dinner meeting and a brief press conference. He expressed his regrets over the delay, citing last-minute travel arrangements from Port Moresby.
Dr. Ken praised the work of the KPHL Kidney Dialysis Centre in Mendi, highlighting its critical role in treating chronic kidney disease patients from across the region. “This specialist service is new and essential. From 2014, Simbu recorded 56 chronic kidney patients with a 37% mortality rate. But in recent years, your team has saved many, including national leaders,” he stated.
He also announced the upcoming commissioning of a new histopathology lab and telemedicine unit in Simbu, underscoring the value of inter-provincial cooperation to improve access to specialist services.
Senior Medical Officer Dr. Benson Meles added, “Mendi is peaceful, and our people respect health services. We welcome everyone.”
The visit wrapped up with a hospital tour, reinforcing a shared vision for stronger regional healthcare systems.
